Berkeley Co. Schools program helping underserved students resumes for the holidays

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)—A school district program that allows citizens to sponsor underserved students in Berkeley County for the holiday season has returned this November.
Berkeley ONEderland, a Berkeley County School District holiday tradition, is now accepting holiday gift sponsors for underserved students.
"The gifts are going to our underserved students, our students at risk, sometimes our students that may be homeless or between housing situations, so we are trying to reach those type of students that most likely may not have the opportunity to have the Christmas or the holiday season that they really desire," said Kimberly McClary, coordinator of student support for BCSD.
The district asks community partners, individuals, families, and organizations to consider sponsoring a child for the 2024 holiday season.
If interested, visit https://www.bcsdschools.net/o/bcsd/article/1845123 and fill out the form linked on the page to get matched with a student. When matched, a sponsor is asked to match the child's wish list to the best of their ability.
"We are hoping to be to get some of the items that the children put on their wish list. They may have toys, they may have gift cards, they may have items of new shoes, jeans, shirts," McClary explained. "We are hoping that those who decide to sponsor will be able to get as many items on the child's wish list as possible, but if you're not able to do that, please feel free to give us gift cards. We'll definitely be able to use those too."
The final sign-up day to become a sponsor is Friday, Nov. 15, and lists will be sent out the following week. All gifts must be dropped off at the Fishburne Educational Center no later than Monday, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m.
"So, if you are willing to help us, we are asking you to please consider being a sponsor for ONEderland this year," McClary said.
