A break from alcohol offers digestive system benefits
Nov 01, 2024
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — Many people take part in giving up alcohol for an entire month as part of a challenge, and while the health benefits are well-known, the actual impact on the digestive system may not be.
Refraining from alcohol for 30 days can significantly improve digestive health, which leads to noticeable changes in how one feels and how the body functions.
Alcohol affects almost every organ in the digestive system, and excessive alcohol consumption leads to digestive problems, like inflammation of the liver (alcoholic hepatitis), gastritis, pancreatitis, and increased risk of gastrointestinal cancers.
Moderate drinking can bother the lining of the digestive tract, disrupt gut bacteria, and impact the absorption of nutrients.
When someone stops for a month, the digestive system is allowed to reset, recover, and repair.
In the first week, the first thing noticed is relief from common digestive symptoms like heartburn or acid reflux. Stomach acid levels begin to normalize, which allows the stomach lining to heal and reduces the risk of ulcers and chronic gastritis.

During the second week, nutrients begin to be absorbed correctly again, promoting a healthy gut. Poor gut bacteria contributes to bloating, diarrhea, and even mood disorders. So by this time, people see an improvement in bowel movements.
At week three, the liver has been able to recover and begin reversing some of the damage that was done by alcohol. If blood tests are taken at this time, they would show improvements in liver enzyme levels.
By week four, and the end of the sober challenge, the digestive system is in a much better condition than at the beginning. The most significant long-term benefit is the reduced risk of developing serious gastrointestinal conditions (liver disease, pancreatitis, and certain cancers).
But these aren't the only improvements that are seen; people report better mental clarity, improved mood, and reduced anxiety.
Taking a break from alcohol for a month offers the digestive system a break and heals remarkably.
