ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — New York's Flu Tracker has been reactivated as the Department of Health begins its weekly flu reports. The flu tracker will provide information on the total number of cases and hospitalizations and allows tracking through geographical locations. According to the DOH's first Influenza Surveillance Report, there were 565 confirmed flu cases reported statewide on the week of October 19. There were 26 people hospitalized with influenza and five outbreaks were reported in long-term care facilities. Study links poor sleep from age 40 and up to dementia However, last week's report saw a 42% increase in positive cases — for a total of 824 cases. State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald says the flu is not prevalent, but that may change this upcoming winter. “As we head into the fall and winter seasons, where we typically see a surge in respiratory infections, I urge all New Yorkers aged six months and older to get vaccinated against the flu,” he said in a statement. "This annual vaccine - developed to target the strains that emerge each year to ensure utmost effectiveness - is safe, effective, and readily available across New York. It provides the best protection against serious illness and inhibits the spread of disease within families and communities." Health experts are encouraging residents to get vaccinated not only against the flu, but also against COVID-19. You can find a nearby location for vaccinations by clicking here.
