SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - It felt more like August than October outside this Halloween as we broke a record with temperatures reaching 81 degrees. How to make sure your property is trick-or-treat ready There were a few trick-or-treaters spotted in Springfield and most of them were not wearing coats because it is so warm, and Halloween nights have been getting warmer over the years. Typically on Halloween, kids have to wear coats with their costumes, but that is not the case this year and according to Climate Central over the years October nights have been getting warmer across the country. "Halloween is becoming less bone-chilling, climate change is taking the spooky holiday and making it a little less haunted and a lot more heated for 216 U.S. Cities compared to the early 1970s," said Shel Winkley, a Meteorologist for Climate Central. Climate Central found that here in the Springfield area, from 1970 to 2023, October nights have warmed by five degrees.
