East Brookfield man dead after early morning house fire

EAST BROOKFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A man is dead after a house fire in East Brookfield early Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were called to 234 West Main Street around just after 3:30 a.m. following 911 calls that fire was coming through the roof.
According to the State Fire Marshal's Office, firefighters found the resident, a man who uses a wheelchair, and brought him out of the home. The man did not survive his injuries.
The State Fire Marshal said there were no working smoke alarms in the home, and the house was a total loss. The man's name was not released.
The fire is being investigated by the East Brookfield Fire Department, East Brookfield Police Department, District 7 fire investigators, State Police fire investigators assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s office.
“On behalf of the East Brookfield Fire Department, I want to offer our condolences to the man’s family,” said Chief Messier. “This is a very sad day for them and the community.”
“The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but we didn’t find any working smoke alarms at the scene,” said State Fire Marshal Davine. “Please, take a few minutes today to be sure you and your loved ones are protected by working smoke alarms on every level of your home.”
