[1] Two NM inmates accused of trying to smuggle drugs into prison - Two inmates are being accused of trying to get drugs into a New Mexico prison. According to a federal indictment, staff at the Cibola County Correctional Center found a package that was near the rec yard. Through their investigation, they learned the package was intended for inmates Lupe Vargas and Edward Vallez. According to the indictment, federal investigators say Vargas and Vallez go Vargas' wife and another person to use a fishing rod to throw drug-filled package into the prison.
[2] Former President Donald Trump holds campaign rally in Albuquerque - Former President Donald Trump visited New Mexico Thursday. Thousands of people from across the state attended to show their support. He was joined by New Mexican politicians including Steve Pearce, Yvette Herrell and Nella Domenici. Trump covered multiple topics including the economy, the war in the Middle East, and gun control.
[3] Brief warm-up then more precipitation ahead for New Mexico - Temperatures will continue to rebound through the early half of the weekend as humid air will stick around in The East Plains, setting up a wetter and more-wintry storm system to arrive late this weekend into early next week with a stronger upper-level low pressure system eventually approaching from the northwest.
[4] Los Alamos Police investigate political sign vandalism, theft - The Los Alamos Police Department released video of a man who is seen placing a swastika sticker on a Trump - Vance political sign on Trinity Dr. They also released video showing someone with a child later stealing that sign. Police say both democratic and republican campaign signs have been target. They are offering a $200 reward for information on the suspects.
[5] 2024 New Mexico Teacher of the Year announced - The Public Education Department presented Lorilei Chavez with the New Mexico Teacher of the Year during a surprise ceremony earlier on Thursday. Chavez teaches Native American studies at Bernalillo High and brought Indigenous-based extracurricular activities to the school.
