Higher education leaders urge Rhode Islanders to vote 'Yes' on Question 2
Nov 01, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — This election year, Rhode Islanders will vote on several bond questions.
Question 2 proposes allocating $160.5 million to improve higher education facilities, with $87.5 million designated for the University of Rhode Island (URI) Biomedical Sciences Building and $73 million for the Rhode Island College (RIC) Cybersecurity Building.
Former Congressman Jim Langevin now chairs the Institute for Cyber Security at RIC and says residents should vote "yes."
"We need to evolve with the time and evolve with the 21st-century technology," he said.
RIC president Dr. Jack Warner said Whipple Hall was built in 1958 and desperately needs an update.
"If Rhode Island is going to have the diverse economy that it needs, it needs many state-of-the-art entities," he explained.
IN-DEPTH: What are the 2024 ballot questions for Rhode Island?
Warner says the cyber security program has more than 400 students who need a new home, and with a modern facility, Rhode Island could be at the forefront of the industry.
With interest payments included, the bond is expected to cost taxpayers $258 million total.
According to the Rhode Island Expenditure Council, that translates to almost $13 million a year, for the next 20 years. Langevin urges voters not to think of the bond as an expense.
"It's an investment in our students, it's an investment in Rhode Island college, but most importantly, it's an investment in the economy of our state," he explained.
If approved, both buildings are expected to be completed and ready to use by 2028.
