Super Build: Project to build home for Navy vet ahead of the Super Bowl underway

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — "I was at a point where I didn't know what to do and I couldn't stay here anymore," said Anthony Mitchell. "I slept in my truck a lot of times, in my yard."
At 77 years old, Mitchell never thought this would be his life. At 18 he joined the Navy, serving our country in the Vietnam War. When he returned to the United States as a war hero, he bought a home, fittingly on St. Anthony Street in the Seventh Ward.
It was a dream come true, a fixer-upper. But, after several storms, it turned out to be a nightmare.

"Walls are falling apart, I had holes in the wall, I couldn't sleep in there because I had critters running through it. I had birds flying through my house," said Mitchell.
In a last-ditch effort, he finally got the help he had been praying for through a construction project called "Super Build" by the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together New Orleans.

"In the last 10 years, we've assisted over 100 veterans and their widows," said William Stoudt. He's the Executive Director of Rebuilding Together New Orleans. "Last year we did 19 veteran projects."
The goal is to have a new home built for Mitchell by the Super Bowl. which is set for Feb. 9, 2025.
"It's a two bedroom, two bath with a fortified gold structure. It will have a hip roof, it will blend into the neighborhood," said Bradley Holland with Habitat for Humanity. "About 1,000 square feet total, it has two porches on it, a front and a back."

Hammers swinging, saws sawing - volunteers came together for Mitchell.
"I'm just gonna lay on the floor and relax and enjoy," said Mitchell. "Big screen TV, sitting right in front of it, drinking a coke and watching the game."
