MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Memphis was placed on a brief "shelter in place" order after shots were fired near the college campus Friday morning. A spokesperson for the university says a suspected road rage incident led to the shooting, however, no one was reported injured. Around 5:30 a.m., students received an email saying, “Police are on the scene and investigating at lot 21 on Patterson. Shots were fired into the air after an incident occurred. The suspect fled from the area on foot toward campus.” The email continues, instructing students to shelter in place. Man dead after shooting, house fire in Frayser “We got three emails. There was like an alert that there was something going on, there was an alert that they were looking for them, and then there was an alert that they were no longer on campus. It’s a lot better than it used to be for sure,” said Kolyn Vick, a student. One person was taken into custody, but another person left the scene on foot. The shelter-in-place has since been lifted. Vick and other students say they did not hear any gunshots on campus and believe the university’s police are doing all they can to protect them from crime.  "Compared to years in the past, it’s been really calm this year since they up the security and police services is like constantly rotating," Vick said. "We see them on campus a lot, it has gotten a lot better." The University of Memphis told WREG that the suspect who got away was last seen in the Highland and Walnut Grove area.
