KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two East Side gang members were convicted of charges stemming from a gun battle inside Crown Center in January. A Jackson County judge found Brian Favela, 23, and Joel Olivas, 24, guilty of numerous charges in the shooting, including two felonies for unlawful use of a weapon, two felonies for armed criminal action, and three misdemeanor harassment counts, according to a news release from the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office. Staffers left wondering about payment after KC-area Applebee’s locations close Prosecutors said a dispute and argument preceded the gunfire. Six people were hit in the January 17 shooting, according to court documents, including three victims not involved in a disturbance between two groups. Investigators found 54 spent shell casings, live rounds on the ground, and recovered eight spent bullets and 22 bullet fragments. The victims all had non-life threatening injuries, but FOX4 is asking about the extent of those injuries, and to what degree those people have recovered. "Today's verdict points to a level of accountability that this office will seek for individuals who engage in this kind of insidious conduct, even when the defendants are armored with Missouri's very generous self-defense laws," Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker stated in the news release. "We will take every step possible to hold offenders accountable for their own criminal behavior." The prosecutor's office says the judge dismissed one count of unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action, determining there wasn't enough evidence to surmount Missouri's self-defense laws. FOX4 is also asking about terrorist threat charges each man faced that aren't mentioned in the news release. Sentencing for Favela and Olivas is set for December 12 at 2 p.m.
