KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An Independence officer has serious injuries and a suspect who was being chased is dead after a crash on I-70. Shortly after 5 a.m. Friday, officers initiated a vehicle stop on a white sedan traveling south on I-470 at I-70. Police did not say why they were being stopped. The person driving the car sped off west on I-70, taking the exit ramp for U.S. 40 Highway. The driver then made a U-turn and proceeded back up the exit ramp, going the wrong way up the ramp, and then collided head-on with an Independence Police car that was trying to assist the primary officer. Police tried to save the driver, but the driver died from the injuries received from the crash. The officer was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.  This crash is under investigation by the Crash Investigations Unit.
