CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- The jury returned a guilty verdict and a judge put out sentencing on a man accused of viciously attacking a woman he was dating, the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office announced on Thursday. Wesley Smith, 40, will serve at least two years in prison after a jury found him guilty of assault with a deadly weapon and assault by strangulation. Records stated that in August of 2021, the victim arrived at the apartment she and Smith shared. The two of them had a 'dating relationship,' the DA's office said. Smith became upset about a social media post the victim made and an argument ensued, records showed. While the victim was in the bathroom, Smith entered, punched the victim "so hard her head hit the shower wall," and then continued to assault her using a belt and a metal shower rod. A bruise in the shape of his foot was left on her back, court officials said. The victim, who testified during last week's trial, was able to run to the landlord, who called 911, and she was transported to an area medical center where she was diagnosed with two hemorrhages and two spinal fractures, the Meck County DA's Office said. Superior Court Judge Reggie McKnight presided over the case.
