EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — With daylight saving time happening this weekend, El Paso Animal Services and its resource rover team are raising awareness for their "Straylight Savings" campaign, a seasonal reminder for pet owners to check their pet's chip, according to the City of El Paso. The City says the program is aimed at pet owners to check their pet's microchips, making sure the information is registered and up to date. "This year, over 19,700 pets have entered El Paso Animal Services shelters, with many already microchipped but missing current contact details, making reunions difficult. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, microchipped pets are more than 50 percent more likely to be returned to their families — but only when linked to accurate, up-to-date information," the City said. The City has also provided a list for pet owners to update their pet's microchip information. That list is the following: Get your pet’s microchip number by visiting your veterinarian or stopping by any El Paso Fire Department station for a quick scan. Visit PetMicrochipLookup.org to find the chip’s manufacturer and follow the instructions to update your contact information. Consider extra security by registering your pet’s microchip with free databases like foundanimals.org or petcolovelost.org. The City says microchips can be implanted by a veterinarian for $25, or those interested can check the El Paso Animal Services calendar for upcoming free microchip clinics.
