(HUERFANO COUNTY, Colo.) — The 3rd Judicial District announced that a plea agreement has been reached with Michael Estrada for Second-Degree Murder for his involvement in a crash that happened on March 9. According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), on March 9 at 2:50 p.m., troopers were dispatched to a serious crash on Colorado State Road 12 at mile marker 13. The crash involved a 2013 EMC Sierra driven by Estrada and a 1999 Jeep Wrangler driven by Brendon Beach. CSP said Estrada was driving between 89 mph and 93 mph in a 45 zone and hit Beach head-on at about 66 mph. When troopers arrived, they found Beach dead on the scene from his injuries. During their investigation troopers suspected Estrada was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Estrada was arrested and found to have a BAC of .134 and under the influence of marijuana. “The crash that took this man’s life and forever changed an entire family wasn’t just a high-speed drunk-driving crash; it was murder,” stated Trooper Yoder, Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit. “Changing attitudes and thoughts is the community’s best hope for reducing drunk driving. If more people regarded drunk driving as a deliberate and dangerous act, fewer families would grieve these senseless losses.” Estrada had two previous DUI convictions from Texas and will be convicted of two more in Colorado, one from this case and another from an arrest in January, according to CSP.
