(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) said a fire station will implement a program to stock equipment to better care for pets on incident scenes. CSFD said that in partnership with the Fire Foundation of Colorado Springs and Westside Animal Hospital, emergency "pet kits" were created to be carried on all apparatus, including leashes, blankets, water bowls, treats, and pet oxygen masks. The program started in March of 2023 with the introduction of "SED" pet maks in honor of former Deputy Chief Steve Dubay who retired that month. CSFD said fire leadership and Station 23 decided to take the program a step further. "Fire crews understand that pets are considered family and the kits will allow firefighters to give pets a better chance of survival and will make them feel more comfortable on scenes," writes CSFD.
