CHARLOTTE, NC — If you’ve been inundated with political text messages this election season you’re not alone, but the Better Business Bureau said some of those texts could be from scammers. “They’re trying to get you to either fill out a form or potentially make a donation. So they want your personal information or they want your hard earned money, your account information, access to your bank accounts,” spokesperson for the Better Business Bureau Julianna O’Rourke said.  The BBB said scammers will send a message that looks like it came from a trusted source, inviting you to participate in a poll or make a donation, but it’s just a way to get your passwords, account numbers, or personal information. Scammers are also using the text your vote scam to defraud voters.  “If you think that you can vote through text and then you do, you’re more than likely not going to actually show up in person to vote, and therefore you kind of lose the opportunity to actually participate,” O’Rourke said.  The BBB said in addition to texts scammers can also call you to try to get money or personal information.  “Unfortunately with phone calls these days and voice cloning, it might sound just like an actual candidate calling you, even if it’s not,” O’Rourke said  Which is why O’Rourke said its important to do your research.  “Just be really careful. If you want to donate to someone, do your own research. Find the organization that you can trust, and then go ahead and make your donation that way.”
