EAST RUTHERFORD – Garrett Wilson single-handedly saved the game.
But did he help kick start saving the Jets season?
The third-year receiver’s one-handed touchdown catch at MetLife Stadium drew comparisons to Odell Beckham, Jr.’s legendary, similar snag a decade ago on the same field, and this one helped spark Gang Green to a 21-13 second half comeback win over the Houston Texans on Thursday night, saving the team from what would have been one of their more embarrassing defeats in recent memory.
At first ruled an incomplete pass, after a lengthy review, Wilson was deemed to have landed in bounds after an acrobatic catch with just his right hand on third-and-19 early in the fourth quarter to give the Jets a lead they ultimately wouldn’t relinquish.
“Oh my goodness, I was talking to the ref while they were reviewing it and said, ‘Just for the sake of posterity, you have to say that is in just so it goes down in history,’” said Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, who earned his first win.
“It would rival the Odell catch. It was amazing…I thought with the shin, I thought it was close enough to definitely challenge. Thankfully, they got it right.”

A first half that saw the Jets score zero points was compounded by Malachi Corley’s inexcusable dropping of what should have been a 19-yard touchdown run on a reverse; he let go of the ball just prior to crossing the plane of the goal line, which set the stadium into a state of shock and would have been an easy catalyst to send the team into a tailspin for the rest of the game.
“Definitely frustrated, to be honest, and angry at the same time, but what an amazing opportunity for this kid to learn and grow from,” Ulbrich said. “I promise you, 10 years from now when he is still playing in this league, that will never happen again.”
Instead, all the attention after the game was on Wilson and Rodgers — the latter of whom rebounded from an abysmal first half in which he completed just seven passes for 32 yards — and another magical, one-handed MetLife moment.
“I played about as bad as I could in the first half and knew it had to get better from there,” Rodgers said. “Before the snap I knew it was third-and-extra-long. I was looking at the weak-side safety, I was like, ‘If he drops down at all, I’m just going to say screw it; I’m going to throw it up to G.’ I felt like I put it in a decent spot, but yeah, I didn’t do a whole lot when it comes down to it. I just kind of lobbed one up there. He made an unbelievable catch. When I saw the replay it looked like he had his knee in, so I thought, shoot, throw the challenge. (Ulbrich) was already in front of me throwing it…yeah, that’s a game-changing play.”
The Jets improved to 3-6 on the season with the win, and realistically would need to win at least six and most likely seven of their last eight games to somehow land a playoff spot. In all likelihood, the second half would be the blueprint of how they’d need to win those games moving forward, with their best players being their best players, including a smothering performance from the defense and a throwback 30 minutes from their 40-year-old, future Hall of Fame quarterback.
“It was kind of season-on-the-line there in the second half,” Rodgers said. “Obviously, we wouldn’t have been mathematically eliminated, but mentally, to go to 2-7 would have been real, real tough. Hopefully this gives us confidence that we can beat anybody because we feel like we could. The way we played on offense in the second half is the way we’ve been kind of waiting for this offense to wake up…we did a lot of good things in the second half. We’ve got to build off of that, but hopefully that kind of lets everybody exhale a little bit. Now we’ve got a little time off and get a trip to Arizona.”
