Quarterback Kody Shinar ran for a pair of touchdowns after halftime and Ramona’s defense shut out Patriot after giving up an early score in the second half. The combination helped the Rams complete the first unbeaten regular season in program history with a 26-7 win over Patriot in a River Valley League game.
“We weren’t as sharp as I’d have liked to be in Week 10, but we did enough to finish the regular season with a win,” Rams coach Ken Mushinskie said. “At 10 a.m. on Sunday, we turn the page from this incredible regular season and give our full focus to our first playoff opponent and doing it all again.”
Sincere Tolbert provided all the first quarter scoring for Ramona (10-0 overall, 5-0 in league) with a pair of touchdown runs from 17 and 12 yards out on consecutive possession, helping the Rams take a 13-0 lead after 12 minutes of action.
Patriot’s defense forced a turnover on downs with 4:44 left to the half, as Shinar’s pass fell to the turf just shy of its intended receiver. Josiah Felix then had a 25-yard run that gave Patriot first-and-10 from the Ramona 20 with just over 2 minutes left in the opening half. However, Ramona cornerback Eniola Olawuyi came up with an interception at the back of the end zone..
“Eni had great position on that pass and came up big with that interception,” Mushinskie added. “All the credit goes to our defensive line and linebackers for the job they did after giving up that one touchdown in frustrating their running game.”
That late turnover was Patriot’s second of the opening half, as a fourth-down attempt to start the second quarter was also unsuccessful. Patriot (5-4, 3-2) had possession to start the second half, and Josiah Felix had 78 yards rushing on the drive, cashing in a 20-yard touchdown run to bring Patriot within 13-7 with 11:33 left in the third quarter.
Shinar called his own number and ran it in on two straight Rams possessions from 15 and 5 yards out, as Ramona took a 26-7 lead after three quarters.
“As a competitor you want to win every game, but when you think about it 10-0 is kind of mind-boggling,” Shinar said. “We definitely got away with a couple of those wins, but this weekend the slate is clean and our goal is to earn six more games (the number necessary to reach another state final).”
