San Jacinto football team routs Temescal Canyon, secures share of Mountain Pass League title
Nov 01, 2024
LAKE ELSINORE — The San Jacinto football team showed no ill effects of a two-week layoff Thursday, recording its second consecutive shutout by defeating Temescal Canyon 46-0 to claim a share of the Mountain Pass League crown and secure an automatic berth in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
Running back Jomini Ransom rushed for 209 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries and quarterback Jaylen Patterson threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Tigers extended their win streak to six games.
San Jacinto, which has beaten Temescal Canyon in all six of their meetings, scored on its first three possessions, including a 53-yard pitch-and-catch from Patterson to Daishaun Davis for a touchdown on the Tigers’ third play from scrimmage. Eric Gonzales pounded in from 9 yards out on the next series, and Ransom outran the Titans’ defense for a 52-yard touchdown run and a 24-0 lead in the first quarter.
Patterson added a 9-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 32-0 lead at halftime.
But it was the aggressive San Jacinto defense that was a Halloween nightmare for Temescal Canyon, holding the Titans to 131 yards, with the total inflated by Trevon Friday’s 25-yard run on the game’s final play. The Tigers intercepted three passes and had a 2-yard fumble return by Pule Enosa for a score.
San Jacinto has outscored opponents 231-11 during the win streak, including three shutouts.
“It’s one of the top defenses I’ve had here since I’ve been the head coach,” the Tigers’ Aric Galliano said. “We fly around, we tackle, and that’s one thing that plays a lot on defense is the hustle and the physicality. And that’s what we’ve been preaching defensively, and they showed it tonight.”
San Jacinto and West Valley, whose showdown last Thursday was canceled after a shooting occurred near the San Jacinto High campus hours before kickoff, finish league play with 3-0 records. San Jacinto has an 8-1 record on the field, but forfeited two games for using an ineligible player, dipping their overall record officially to 6-3. West Valley is 7-1 overall after Thursday’s 28-10 victory over Tahquitz.
The playoff pairings will be announced Sunday. And although the Tigers do not know their division assignment, Galliano, whose 2022 club won the Division 6 championship, is pleased with their rise in the rankings.
“We were in Division 7 when we started, and to climb our way up every year, win in 6, 5 last year and now we’re taking on teams we haven’t played before, trying to prepare us,” Galliano said. “And now we’re getting ranked up there, top 30 teams in the Southern Section. For little old San Jacinto, it’s pretty cool.”
San Jacinto, No. 26 in the most recent CalPreps.com Southern Section rankings, uses a variety of blitzes, quickness and athleticism to cause havoc for offensive coordinators. Albert Kapu knocked down a pass on Temescal Canyon’s first series of the game. Daylen Love and Markus Jones intercepted passes in the first half, and Jeremiah Brown picked off a throw tipped by defensive tackle Ilias Williams. Damere Coleman was credited with forcing the fumble that Enosa snatched out of the air and carried into the end zone.
“We have a lot of guys who run track, and we spend a lot of time in the offseason in speed training,” Galliano said. “It’s a testament to their hard work and being ready to go.
“We’re playing physical football. We try to stop the run, first and foremost, and it’s demoralizing to the other team, flying around and being aggressive.”

“They’ve got dudes,” Temescal Canyon coach Derek Hill said. “They are athletic, they’re really well-coached, and they live up to the hype. We knew this was going to be our greatest test.”
The loss drops Temescal Canyon to 5-4 overall, and the Titans have petitioned for consideration as an at-large entry in the Southern Section playoffs.
