In an effort to “streamline” its three-county operations, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest will close its Mission Bay health center in San Diego in early 2025, the organization announced this week. In a statement, Darrah DiGiorgio Johnson, the organization’s chief executive officer, said that she believes other nearby health centers will be able to handle appointments that would otherwise have gone to the Mission Bay Mimi Brien Health Center on Mission Bay Drive. “We are confident that our patients will be able to adequately access their care at our 10 surrounding health centers located throughout San Diego County,” DiGiorgio Johnson said. The closest of those clinics is the newly remodeled Joan & Irwin Jacobs Center in Kearny Mesa, followed by the Michelle Wagner Center on First Avenue in downtown San Diego and the Corton/Eibl Family Center in Mira Mesa. Employees currently working in Mission Bay will be relocated to other health centers in the region. “We are grateful for our Mission Bay team and their service and commitment to our patients and the Mission Bay community over the past two decades,” DiGiorgio Johnson said. “This step helps us more closely match capacity and demand across our health centers and further our sustainability efforts across our affiliate(s).” Health clinics across the nation have recently faced increased protest activities from anti-abortion activists, prompting the San Diego City Council to enact “buffer” restrictions on such demonstrations in the spring. Planned Parenthood said such protests played no role in the Mission Bay closure.
