BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) - A family of four lost their home on Fox Tail Drive Sunday, and some members of the community are concerned after hearing how long it took fire crews to get on the scene. This comes as the county is working to build back its leadership by hiring a new fire and emergency services director and an emergency management director. Just under 10 minutes is how long it took for the first unit to get to the home. Some people in the community say the response wasn’t fast enough, and that’s why this home is now heavily damaged. Others say the time is pretty good. This is just another case where the community is calling into question whether the county is prepared, fully staffed and ready for growth. The county sent WSAV this statement regarding the incident, "While the NFPA standard for rural fire response is generally around 14 minutes, our team exceeded this benchmark, reflecting our commitment to rapid, effective service. Over the past decade, significant investments in our department have expanded our team from 34 to over 100 dedicated professionals, with funding rising from $2.9 million in 2014 to over $10 million in the current budget. We recently celebrated a graduating recruit class, and another is actively training, ensuring a steady flow of highly prepared responders. This commitment to public safety continues, with additional positions proposed in the upcoming budget. Our hearts go out to the family affected by this tragic loss of property, and we are thankful that no one, resident or emergency responder, was injured." According to the fire department’s incident report, a golf cart caught on fire in the garage which spread to the home. The home is located between 4 fire stations, each about a 6 to 7-minute drive away.  According to the county, new positions are coming, and a budget is being finalized. They also plan to expand positions every year. Officials are going over a list of candidates. News 3 asked for the criteria for those positions, attached below.  Director-of-Fire-and-Emergency-ServicesDownload EMA-Director-PositionDownload If you would like to donate to the family who lost their home, click here.
