Hundreds take to the streets for Halloween on Hanover Avenue

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The 1900 block of Hanover Avenue featured multiple homes with various decor, hundreds of people with costumes showing off their Halloween best and lots of candy!
"It's so much fun here. Just the, you know, all the costumes, all the kids, everybody having a great time," said Carmelita, a resident of Richmond, "I'm definitely coming back if they do it again next year and after that."
The neighborhood-led staple featured those of all ages in the Halloween spirit all along Hanover Avenue between North Granby and Meadow Streets, which were both blocked off.
The exact start date of the yearly tradition is unknown however some folks told 8News they've been attending the annual event since the 1980s.

Others, such as Tricia Atherly, recently joined in on the fun as her family moved to the area two years ago.
"We were thrilled to find out the house we were looking at was on Hanover Avenue, it was a bonus," Atherly said. "[This] is why we do it, for the kids, we love to see the excitement, give them something to enjoy."
"We moved here July 2023, so last year was our first," said Lori Dejong. "[We] didn't do Halloween before this and we decided to go all in when we heard what it was."
The fun continued with music and adults of all ages joining in on the spooky-filled evening.
Both North Granby and Meadow Streets reopened after 9 p.m.
