What Halloween candies are popular this year?
Oct 31, 2024
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) - It's October 31st, meaning Halloween candy and decorations will soon be on sale and replaced with Christmas trees and Santa Claus, if they aren't already.
There's not much left for Halloween candy or decorations at Lewis Drug on 69th and Louise in Sioux Falls.
"Sales have been pretty strong, we still have some candy left for those last-minute shoppers but otherwise overall it's been very well," store manager Tyler Stoltz said.
Stoltz says chocolate candy continues to be popular amongst Halloween shoppers. Which is in line with national trends.
According to data compiled by online bulk candy seller Candy Store, there's a new national champ for most popular candy nationwide this year -- M&M's dethroned last year's champ Reese's Cups, but the peanut butter confections are still in second place, followed by Sour Patch Kids, Skittles and Starburst.

If you want to get your hands on some of those treats, now is the time as the transition to more wintry goodies begins.
"Some of the candy's on sale, $3.99 this week," Stoltz said.
Amongst what's left of the Halloween items at Lewis Drug, there's a few Thanksgiving options for decorating but then you walk a few aisles down and it's Christmas all over. Proving that this time of year is busy for retailers.
"Definitely takes a lot of time to set up and transition from, you know, Fall or Summer stuff to winter but it's fun," Stoltz said.
And before we know it, Santa Claus will be making his rounds once again.
Some data from Candy Store that might shock you -- the number one Halloween candy for South Dakotans this year is Jolly Ranchers, de-throning last year's champ for the state -- Starbursts. In Minnesota, the top candy spot goes to Hot Tamales, Iowans are loving the national champ of M&M's and Nebraskans are choosing Sour Patch Kids.
