NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Police are searching for the person driving the vehicle that struck and killed a 74-year-old man who was riding his bicycle in Newport News last Saturday. Neighbors described the victim, Dennis Gene Clarkson, as a nice guy. "Just generally that he was really just a really kind person, and it shouldn't have happened to him," said neighbor Peter Glanville. "He does everything. He's very independent. He takes care of his lawn, he's immaculate. He's friendly," said neighbor Cynthia Lake. At around 6:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, officers responded to the area of Harpersville Road and Jefferson Avenue, where they located Clarkson unconscious in the roadway. Clarkson was riding his bike when he was struck by a white sedan. "He could drive, but I think he valued the exercise and he would ride his bike to the store and back and see him riding with, you know, like bags on his handlebars," said neighbor Chloricia Myers. "You know, so, I was really shocked." Neighbors say it is a pretty safe area, but add that sometimes, people drive over the speed limit. "In our neighborhood, I look in the local area as just ... keep an eye out because not everyone is driving without distraction," Glanville said. "If you're crossing the street, just watch. We do have a lot of people, especially on Jefferson, that just jump out in the middle of the middle of the evening and you don't see anything until you're right up on someone." Clarkson was pronounced dead at the scene. Newport News Police Department is seeking the public's help in finding the driver involved in the fatal hit-and-run crash. He was shown heading west on Harpersville Road shortly before the crash. "I hope that they find the person who did that," Myers said. "Let's say it was an accident. Maybe they didn't see him. But the right thing to do is stop and check on his well-being."
