NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It's a night all about collecting as much candy as you can, but nowadays, a lot of that candy is coming from cars instead of homes. This trend of trunk-or-treat has been around for decades, but some claim it has seen a spike in popularity over the past few years. "This is great for the community; everybody getting together. You don't have to go door to door," Trunk-or-treat mother Neke Redman said. Isolated storms continue through Halloween night, more rain possible Friday Some say this popularity spike is due to the convenience of the tradition by centralizing candy grabbing in one spot.However, others say it's due to safety of the events, as children do not have to cross roads or knock on strangers' doors. "It's more safety each year it looks like. It looks like it's getting more safety each year," Trick-or-treat grandmother Patricia Evans said. "It's the closeness you know? Everything is close. You're not just walking in the streets. You have the police car right here, so," Redman said. There are still those looking to make the streets safer for those looking to keep traditional trick-or-treating alive. Crimestoppers is partnering with several law enforcement agencies on "Operation Boo Dat," which has been created to arrest criminals including sex offenders in southern Louisiana parishes. Operation Boo Dat was created around 2010, and this year it has about 30 fugitives on the list. ‘Party with the police,’ NOPD hosting trunk-or-treat events "Each of them, there is an award of up to $1,000. We've caught up to two of them off the list so far, and we're currently at eight arrested so far. That might not sound like a lot, but some of them had crimes against children," US Marshal Deputy Brian Fair said. Fair says that, while there should be no trouble on your regular Halloween trick-or-treating route, it's always best to follow these safety tips just in case. "You should probably not allow your kids to go out without an adult accompanying them. You should know your neighborhood well. The national sex offender registry, you can look on there and see if there are any registered sex offenders on there. We're not saying they're going to cause problems, but it's nice to know if they're in the neighborhood," Fair said.
