EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - A 27-year-old man was charged with assault resulting in serious bodily injury after he allegedly attacked a friend with a beer bottle, leaving the victim with a partially amputated nose, back in January off the roadway of Carrizo Canyon Road near the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation, according to court documents obtained by KTSM. According to court documents, Lewis Michael Bigmouth, 27, was arrested and has been in custody in the Doña Ana County Detention Center since Oct. 24 for tribal charges that include aggravated battery. On Jan. 5, police in Lincoln County responded to an assault incident. Upon arrival, officers met with the victim who had suffered a severe injury to his nose. Approximately 1/3 of the skin and cartilage was cut off from the tip of the victim's nose, according to court documents. According to court documents, the victim told officers at approximately 12:30 p.m. he picked up his friend, Bigmouth, at his mother's house in Carrizo Trails to run errands in Ruidoso. The victim stated he took Bigmouth to the bank to get money, then they went to Walgreens to purchase alcohol. Later, the two of them went to order pizza and waited across the street at a bar while they waited for their food. After the pizza was done, they went to drink more alcohol. Later, Bigmouth wanted to go to another place to drink and the victim said that at that point, Bigmouth was heavily intoxicated, according to court documents. According to court documents, the victim said he and Bigmouth were traveling on Carrizo Canyon Road when they traveled off the roadway and got the vehicle stuck in the snow. The victim said he and Bigmouth got into a verbal altercation that turned physical after the vehicle got stuck in the snow. The victim also said he initially saw Bigmouth grab a beer bottle at the neck and struck him in the face, according to court documents. According to court documents, the victim did not realize how severe his injuries were. He was more focused on getting his truck unstuck from the snow. Bigmouth immediately left the scene after the incident and caught a ride from a random person. The victim stated there were no witnesses present during the incident, according to court documents. According to court documents, at approximately 5:25 p.m. and after the altercation, the victim called his mother to help him pull his truck out of the snow. They then traveled to the victim's house where he took a shower and noticed how severe his injuries were. The victim's mother took him to the hospital where they recommended transfer to the University Medical Center (UMC) in El Paso for further treatment and surgery. The victim was transferred the same day, according to court documents. A tribal criminal complaint and an arrest warrant were issued for Bigmouth. However, after the incident, Bigmouth fled the area. He was not arrested on the tribal warrant until April 24, and he was booked at Lincoln County Detention Center for tribal charges that include aggravated battery, according to court documents. According to court documents, on April 30, Bigmouth was interviewed at the Lincoln County Detention Center where he stated he and the victim were childhood friends and that their families were close. Bigmouth stated they both were drinking and were heavily intoxicated. When they weredriving home, they ran off the road and got stuck in the snow. Bigmouth said he sat there inthe victim's vehicle for a minute and blacked out. He then said he woke up in another car and did not remember what he did to the victim, according to court documents. According to court documents, Bigmouth read the tribal criminal complaint and stated that the victim "didn't deserve what he did to him." Bigmouth indicated he wanted to apologize to the victim but said he never reached out because he was scared.
