EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - Hundreds of Canutillo Independent School District (CISD) teachers, nurses and support staff will receive mental health training during the 2024 Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Bowl held on Friday, Nov. 1 at the Garcia Elementary School, 6550 Westside Dr.
"The event focuses on providing Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges in children," read the news release sent by the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
This district-wide event is part of the ongoing Mental Health Service Provision and Awareness Program, a partnership between UTEP and CISD, according to the news release.
UTEP said the event will provide approximately 784 CISD staff members with YMHFA training.
Certified YMHFA trainers from UTEP and partner organizations, like Emergence Health Network, will conduct sessions to enhance mental health awareness and support among educators, according to UTEP.
UTEP said Rosario Olivera, MSW, an instructor in the UTEP Department of Social Work, is the principal investigator behind the project, which is supported by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
