MINOT, ND (KXNET) — Bringing a book to life is what one North Dakota student did for the local library. Sophia Carlton is a student at Surrey Public School. She says she would visit Ward County Public Library's bookmobile every day, and one day, she came across an opportunity to show off her creativity. "The old bookmobile was getting a little bit old so they were going to do a new one and they posted online that you could draw a picture and enter it to win," Carlton said. Carlton got to design the drawing, and her inspiration came from the book 'Grim Warning,' the third book in the 'Land of Stories' book series. "It was about, she had found out she was the fairy grandmother's granddaughter, so she was a fairy, and she had to fight off dragons from the evil enchantress from snow white," said Carlton. Part of her drawing is a book on a table in a library, flames shooting out of the book, and you are transported into that scene of the fairy and dragon fighting. Carlton says she really likes the design and thinks it turned out really well. But then again, we're our own worst critics. "The one thing I probably could have done better was the detail on the fairy, knowing that the dragon and the rest of the photo has more detail than the fairy," Carlton said. "But other than that, I think it's probably one of the best things I've drawn yet." Cindy Whitehorn and her Halloween town in Hebron It took her a few days to come up with the design and eight hours to complete the drawing. "I think there was a few backsets for me. Like the pixilation, we had a problem where, when we blew it up, it was going to be too pixilated, so we had to cartoonize it," Carlton said. "My message to people is if something happens, never give up because good things can happen out of bad things." She used a pencil, a ruler, watercolor, markers, and colored pencils for the drawing. This new bookmobile holds about 3,000 books but it's not just about the words on paper that makes it special. "A. That it's new, and then it's super special that we were able to have a student draw it, and it's a student who has been on the bookmobile. She was on the old one, she gets to use the new one and to see it grow up with her," said Kerri Boetcher the director of the Ward County Public Library. She says this new bookmobile cost more than $300,000 dollars, and the wrap/design itself was just under $5,000 dollars. The funds came from donations from local organizations and ARPA money from the county. Boetcher says she enjoyed seeing Carlton's reaction to her artwork on the new bookmobile.
