BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- Two men were found dead in a home Tuesday, turning the nearby community upside down. Now, the fate of three lives hangs in the balance: the dogs left behind. Cries could be heard from one of the dogs stuck in a garage the day after two men were found shot to death on Cresson Court, next door to a BPD officer. An animal seizure notice was on the door set for Friday, three days after the incident. "The only way we're able to forcibly gain entry to your property is when law enforcement is on scene," said Nick Cullen, with Kern Animal Services. A neighbor says one of the dogs was removed from the home Wednesday. "A pit bull, Aqua, was taken away with the sheriff's office," said neighbor Patricia Stephens. After 17 News aired a report Wednesday and on Thursday there was a new notice on the door. This one showed two dogs had been impounded with instructions to redeem them from the shelter by Nov. 4. "We wouldn't treat these animals any different from any other of the 14,000 animals that come to us every year. Which means they'll go through a stray hold period and then they'll be evaluated," said Cullen. "If they're friendly and not unsafe, they'll be placed up for adoption." The dogs could be adopted in five days, but if they're micro-chipped it could take longer. "We'll keep them as long as we can and pray they get a good home," said Cullen. The three dogs have been transported to Kern Animal Services where they'll either be retrieved by family members, adopted or put on the euthanasia list.
