STREETSBORO — Riverside’s run to regionals as come to an end. The Beavers (11-13) proved a lot of doubters wrong on the way to winning the district championship, but they ran into Avon. They were swept by the Eagles, 25-10, 25-16, 25-15, in a Division II regional semifinal Oct. 31 at Streetsboro. Avon (23-2) will return to Streetsboro at 1 p.m. Nov. 2 to play Austintown-Fitch for the regional championship. “I think it shows the grit to put your head down and continue to work,” Riverside coach Jess Peters said. “We started off not very strong opening up the season with Twinsburg and losing, 3-0. Seeing them again in first round of districts and winning that, 3-0, it just shows that continuous growth. We’ve been here but it has been four years since we’ve since this regional floor. We want to get that back in our repertoire.” The Eagles got out to a hot start and didn’t look back. They have yet to drop a set in the postseason. Bethany Sherwood (match-high 15 kills) and Londyn Stone (11 kills) both notched five kills each in the opening set to ignite the high-powered offense. After a slow start in the first set, Riverside picked up the defensive intensity. The Beavers made life difficult for Avon’s offense and the score reflected that. Two straight kills from Aubrey Laurenty cut the deficit to three in the second set. However, the Eagles picked up midway through the set once again and took control with a 10-3 run. Sherwood racked up five more kills in the second and Stone had four. Lily Hamilton had seven kills of her own for the match and she had the set-winning kill in the final two sets. “You can definitely see that we prepared for this team,” Avon coach Kara Coffman said. “We scouted this team really well, we knew all of their tendencies. We were just talking about how impressive it was that we kept them (almost under 15) in all three sets in a regional semifinal game.” The third set was close early on as Avon held a 12-10 and had to call its first timeout of the match. The Eagles responded with three straight points out of the huddle, including two blocks from Sherwood. A block from Ally Urban later stretched the lead to seven and that’s what it took to spark one last run. They scored the final five points capped off by an ace from Kaitlyn Pojman and a kill from Hamilton. “They run a very quick offense and they spread the ball very well,” Peters said. “We can’t necessarily commit on one girls because they have three girls at all times and one girl in the back row that is an aggressive attack. Their passing is sound, which is allowing them to be in system and allowing them to run a quick offense and give the ball to anyone that they want.” Jacelyn Zgnoc led the Beavers with 11 kills, followed by four from McKenzie Miller. Riverside graduates two seniors, Miller and Courtney Johnson, but has a bright future with all of the returners next season. The Beavers broke through to win the district title after falling short in the district final the past two years. This postseason ride could set the tone for the program. “I’ve been in that district game for the past two years and didn’t win it,” Miller said. “Getting on that bus on the way home felt completely different going into practice knowing we still had more to come. I know tonight was challenge, but it was nice to even be here.”
