The Detroit Lions released their Week 9 Thursday injury report and Jared Goff, along with several others, was back on the practice field. The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers were back on the field on Thursday, and both teams received some good news as several players—including both starting quarterbacks—were able to return to practice.
Let’s take a look at Thursday’s injury report and get you up to date with what we know. Note that any changes from yesterday’s report will be bolded.
No practice
DL Josh Paschal (illness)
LB Malcolm Rodriguez (ankle)
Paschal remains unable to practice as he tries to get his body back on track following a concern that was identified during one of his annual cancer screenings. Fortunately, Paschal has said this is not a long-term issue and he hopes to be back soon. Coach Dan Campbell said things were “TBD” with Paschal at the moment, which essentially means the Lions are in a wait-and-see mode.
Rodriguez missed another practice, as he continues to work his way back from an ankle re-aggravation. He is expected to miss this week's game against the Packers but could return in Week 10 when the Lions face the Houston Texans.
Limited practice
LT Taylor Decker (chest) — upgraded from no practice on Wednesday
DT Mekhi Wingo (ankle) — NEW INJURY
Decker returned to practice on Thursday, but he was still limited as he recovers from a chest injury. Getting a practice in is encouraging, and we will likely get an update from Campbell at his Friday morning press conference.
Wingo was added to the injury report on Thursday, which points to a possible mid-week injury. These types of injuries can be troublesome, potentially even leading to him missing the upcoming game, but until we hear an update from Campbell, it’s hard to know much more at this time.
Full practice
QB Jared Goff (ankle) — upgraded from no practice on Wednesday
RB Sione Vaki (knee) — upgraded from no practice on Wednesday
LG Graham Glasgow (rest)
C Frank Ragnow (rest)
RG Kevin Zeitler (rest)
DL Levi Onwuzurike (rest)
DL DJ Reader (rest)
DT Brodric Martin (knee) — Days remaining in injury evaluation window: 19
Goff told the media on Wednesday that his ankle was “okay” and that he would likely return to practice on Thursday, and sure enough, he was back out there with the starters. It’s always worth keeping a close eye on quarterback injuries, but this seems to be a non-issue for the Lions.
After working out with trainers on Wednesday, Vaki was able to return to practice, which is a good sign for his availability. Vaki was one of the Lions’ best special teams contributors—graded only behind Kalif Raymond, per PFF—against the Titans last week, and is living up to the pre-draft hype of him being the best special teamer in this past draft class.
