(DC News Now) -- Charging documents DC News Now obtained Thursday delved into details of a former Prince George's County mayor who was arrested and charged with child pornography-related charges. The FBI arrested former University Park Mayor Joel Biermann on Oct. 28, according to a town spokesperson. Former University Park Mayor Joel Biermann arrested by FBI for child porn, officials say Charging documents said that the arrest was part of an ongoing investigation into Biermann. The FBI notified the Defense Attorney of this investigation in March 2024. In April 2024, the FBI got records from Meta via a subpoena for Biermann's Facebook account. Investigators found over 4,500 messages between January 2021 and December 2023 where he paid for sexually explicit material of young boys from an unknown person who lives outside of the U.S. In March 2024, the FBI subpoenaed PayPal records for Biermann's account between Jan. 1, 2023, and March 11, 2024. The records showed six payments from Biermann to the unknown person totaling over $850. Charging documents outlined some of the payments and descriptions -- including one payment of $100.50 for "[Victim's name] shoot and place to rent" and one payment of $246.57 "for camera and thongs." Prosecutors said that Biermann was serving as the mayor of the town of University Park during the time that he was soliciting this material. He served as mayor from June 2022 to June 2024. The FBI executed its search warrant at his home in University Park on Oct. 28, 2024. During that search, they found several electronic devices and hard drives. One such hard drive had "numerous file folders" "containing child pornography." The file folders had explicit names describing sexual acts and labeled ages as young as 2 years old. Prosecutors said that in each of the files, the boys seemed to be Asian. Charging documents said that someone else in the home confirmed that it belonged to Biermann. There were also photos of Biermann on the same hard drive. There were additional files on his phone as well. The FBI found a young boy's underwear and a blow-up doll with childlike anatomy in Biermann's office. Biermann is facing 22 charges of possessing child pornography as well as several other related charges.
