Fairfax County assistant principal failed to report abuse of multiple children, police say

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) -- A Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) assistant principal has been charged with a count of Failure to Report after a teacher at her school allegedly assaulted multiple special needs students.
Fairfax County police charged 42-year-old Dana Chen, an assistant principal at White Oaks Elementary School in Burke.
The charge comes after the June 2024 arrest of teacher 62-year-old teacher Elizabeth Nagagata. Nagagata allegedly abused several 4-year-old special education students, spanning from September 2023 to April 2024.
Chen allegedly knew about the abuse and did not report it to the Fairfax County Police Department or Child Protective Services, as required by law.

According to court documents, multiple witnesses told investigators about Nagagata’s treatment of students. They said that she shoved a student into furniture, pulled chairs out from under students, stomped on a child’s arm and picked children up off the floor to drop them.
One child allegedly sustained bruises from her abuse.
According to documents filed by her attorney, Nagagata holds two master’s degrees and moved to the area in 1999.
At the time of her arrest, she was living in Fairfax County with her husband. She is on leave from her position. Nagagata is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. She faces seven counts of simple assault.
Chen was released on summons. The school division confirmed to DC News Now that she is also being suspended without pay.
