At 8 a.m. Thursday morning, the bride and groom from “Beetlejuice 2” walked into Marion County Justice Court.  They were followed by a toddler in a pumpkin onesie, the “Beetlejuice” bride’s daughter.  Kaylynn Laack married her fiancé Tyler Laack surrounded by headstones and sparkling spiderwebs on the couple’s favorite holiday.   Justice of the Peace Justin Kidd, dressed as a pirate for Halloween, decorated the courtroom so that the 13 couples he married today could have court weddings that feel special. Kidd said that because of the decorations, which cost only $200, he sees “a lot of joy for not a lot of money.”  Kaylynn, 21, and Tyler, 19, met on Snapchat in September 2023 and messaged for two days before Kaylynn invited Tyler to meet in person. The two now live in an apartment in Salem with Kaylynn’s two children. “He came over to my house and never left,” Kaylynn said. The couple’s first date was to the Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper concert in Ridgefield, Washington, followed by a meal at Denny’s.  One month into dating, on Halloween, Kaylynn was folding laundry on their bed in her pajamas. She watched Tyler drop to one knee and propose marriage.  Given the date of their engagement, a Halloween wedding was an easy decision for the couple to make, but first Kaylynn had to persuade Kidd to give them a slot in his already full Halloween schedule. “I was already full, but they were very persuasive about how much they love the holiday,” Kidd said in an email. “I had 12 before them, and somehow, adding a 13th Halloween wedding sounded just right.” One month into their engagement, Kaylynn got into a car crash, leaving Tyler to step up in caring for her two toddlers. Tyler said that in the months before the crash, he hadn’t truly connected with the children, but when he took the lead as their parent, it developed their relationship.  “I knew I wanted that to be my family,” he said. Even though his relationship with Kaylynn has only been little more than a year, he said it feels like they’ve known each other a lot longer.  Before signing the marriage certificate, Kidd asked the couple for their favorite things about each other. Kaylynn said the way he looks at her, and that it feels like he has cartoon heart eyes when he sees her. Tyler said it’s Kaylynn’s genuine care in his interests.  Justice of the Peace Justin Kidd, dressed as a pirate, walking Kaylynn and Tyler Laack, dressed as characters from “Beetlejuice 2,” through their vows on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024. (Madeleine Moore/Salem Reporter) Kidd wrote vows with “Beetlejuice” references and started them off saying, “As Beetlejuice would say, it’s showtime!” Kaylynn told Kidd that for the rest of their wedding day, they’re returning to their first date spot at Denny’s and rewatching “Beetlejuice 2.” This is Kidd’s second year of marrying couples all day on Halloween. Last year, he married 10 couples, dressed as a Jedi.  For Kidd, the fun and joy from weddings help fight the seriousness and pain that can come with being in court. Kidd also performs weddings on Valentine’s Day, with the same joy and colorful decorations. This year on Valentine’s Day, he married 12 couples.  Kidd said he’s married around 500 couples in the last year.  Another couple in Kidd’s schedule showed up at 2 p.m. in skeleton onesies. Emily Bloink, 28, and Matt Marquez, 29, said they are “truly eloping,” today but will also have a private ceremony at Silver Falls State Park this week and a bigger party in spring next year.  Bloink met Marquez almost six years ago at a Thundercat concert in Santa Cruz, California in late December 2018. The two started dating on New Year’s Day, attending a party for their first date. Due to having one anniversary on a holiday, both Bloink and Marquez were excited to add a second holiday to their relationship milestones. Two years ago, on a family trip to Hawaii, Marquez proposed on the same beach that Bloink’s parents eloped on years ago.  The couple moved to Salem in May when Marquez got a job as a grant and project coordinator at Cherriots. Bloink says she and Marquez enjoy going the nontraditional route. Her engagement ring has an orange fire opal. When they learned of Kidd’s Halloween weddings, the two of them knew they wanted to do it.  “We were looking for a way to celebrate our wedding as a couple … this is just fun,” Marquez said. He also appreciates the thoughtfulness Kidd puts into making court weddings an experience for each couple.  Newlyweds Emily Bloink and Matt Marquez feed each other cupcakes after getting married on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024. (Madeleine Moore/Salem Reporter) From waiting outside the courtroom to walking to the car, Bloink smiled nonstop. When she walked into the courtroom she froze and her jaw dropped at the sight of all the Halloween decorations.   After the ceremony, the couple said they’re headed to a park in McMinnville to pop a bottle of champagne and enjoy the wedding cake they baked last night.  The experience was especially meaningful, Bloink said, as Halloween and this time of year is believed to be when loved ones who have died are closer to people still living. She said that marrying on Halloween is a way for people they’ve lost to be closer to them for their wedding.  The self-described “goofy pair” is looking forward to having wedding clothes they can wear on future Halloweens to celebrate their wedding anniversary and holiday in one. Leaving the ceremony, Bloink said she felt like “a skeleton full of life.” Contact reporter Madeleine Moore: [email protected].
