SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A passenger who was sleeping in their seat on a flight originating from San Francisco International Airport was assaulted by another passenger, according to a federal affidavit. The flight, United Airlines Flight 2247, was flying nonstop from SFO to Dulles International Airport on Monday, Oct. 28.
The affidavit, which cites testimony from a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, states that about two hours into the flight, a passenger, identified as Everett Chad Nelson, got up from his assigned seat in the rear of the aircraft and headed to the lavatory at the front. After exiting the lavatory, Nelson stopped at seat 12F and with no notice, began physically attacking a passenger who was sleeping in his seat.

Nelson, the affidavit says, repeatedly punched him in the face and head until blood was drawn. The victim sustained bruising on his eyes and a gash on his nose. The victim's blood could be seen on the sleeves of Nelson's lime green windbreaker.
The assault lasted about a minute before the victim began screaming. A third passenger intervened and pulled Nelson away. Nelson was moved to a seat near the front of the plane and monitored by the intervening passenger.
The victim was treated by a doctor aboard the flight for abrasions to the face and head. Following the assault, witnesses saw blood on the seat near the victim and on the wall and window.
The FBI was contacted by the Transportation Security Administration regarding the incident. Nelson was charged by the FBI in the Eastern District of Virginia for committing assault by beating, striking and wounding.
"Thanks to the quick action of our crew and customers, one passenger was restrained after becoming physically aggressive toward another customer on a flight from San Francisco to Washington Dulles on Monday," a United representative told KRON4.com. "The flight landed safely and was met by paramedics and local law enforcement."
There were 82 passengers and six crew on the plane at the time of the assault, according to the airlines.
Nelson was being detained in federal custody as of Wednesday.
