BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) –  It's a form of communication that has never been at metro-area voting booths until now. Those who have trouble hearing or seeing in Bernalillo County can now get help through sign language interpreters at the polls. The new effort is part of a county initiative aimed at voter inclusivity. "The New Mexico Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing came to us, and they expressed not having the accessibility they would like to have their individuals from their community come and vote in person at our polling sites," said Nathan Jaramillo, Bernalillo County Bureau of Elections administrator. "I think often deaf-blind individuals experience confusion when they are voting, whether it's the registration process, or coming up to check in, and recognizing, 'Am I at the right table? Is there where I need to go? How do I make sure that I have what I need,'" said Megan Gorsuch, an interpreter. The county does not have braille ballots, but they do have special audio equipment with braille instructions that can help those who are impaired cast their ballot. "In addition to that, we also have other types of interpreters for Navajo, Keres, Tiwa, Spanish, and Vietnamese," Jaramillo explained. The new sign language interpreters will be available on Election Day at the Highland High School polling location.
