Lobos receiver from Mexico shines in new opportunity

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – For the last three and a half years, Michael Buckley flew under the radar for the Lobo football team. The receiver from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico taught himself the game though YouTube and playing in the back yard before moving to the America at 16. He walked on to UNM in 2021 and only played seven offensive snaps prior to last week's game against Colorado State. Due to injuries in the receiver room, Buckley stepped up and finished the game with seven catches for 90 yards.
"I was just comfortable, honestly," Buckley said. "These coaches really imply us and has us practice like we play. So, it just felt like practice honestly."
His love for the game comes from his father, a longtime Seattle Seahawks fan. Following his performance against CSU, Buckley said it was emotional for him and his family.
"I mean they were just excited, there were tears down their eyes.... Watching the Seahawks, seeing how happy he got I was like man I want to do this. I want to make him happy, play football."
Following Buckley's performance against Colorado State, UNM presented him with a scholarship on Monday.
