Inland college notes: California Baptist University gets new playbyplay and commentary duo
Oct 31, 2024
A pair of familiar voices have signed on to broadcast the California Baptist University men’s basketball and baseball games for years to come.
Pep Fernandez and Geoff Gorham will be the live, play-by-play and commentary duo for all Lancers men’s basketball games from the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center this season, starting with the home opener against Incarnate Word on Monday night at 7 p.m.
“It’s exciting!” CBU men’s basketball coach Rick Croy said. “Gorham has such a passion for the community brings so much enthusiasm to everything he does, and the connecting with Pep and what they do together, it’s just great timing.”
Gorham, a former Street & Smith high school All-American and a member of Ramona High School’s Hall of Fame, played at Riverside City College and CBU before a brief professional career overseas.
“CBU is where I want to be at this point in my career,” said Gorham, who has more than 50 years in the game of basketball. “I can’t wait to ‘Lance Up’.”
The son of one of Riverside’s legendary multi-sport coaches, Gorham has coached both collegiately and at the high school level and currently teaches in Riverside.
“Riverside is my community,” Gorham said. “I love being vice president of the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame (and) I love being a positive voice for Riverside. (Pep) and I are the sports duo in this city. We make people want to tune in and watch. You never know what will happen when we get together.”
Fernandez is the founder and long-time host of the Inland Sports Show. A former collegiate soccer player and a graduate of Chico State, Fernandez resides in Redlands.
“I had the honor of calling CBU men’s and women’s basketball games for several seasons and I’m excited to back doing the men’s games on ESPN+,” Fernandez said. “I have a long relationship with CBU through the Inland Sports Show, and I also host their CBU Lancers Athletic Podcast, so I’ve been plugged in with the Lancers for a while now.”
The pair has extensively teamed up to host “Friday Night Pep Rally” for the last decade on YouTube for RiversideTV, and previously appearing on broadcasts for UC Riverside athletics.
“I’m going to guess that Geoff and I have more hours together on television, radio and the internet than anyone in the Inland Empire,” Fernandez said. “To be able to team up and do for CBU is a huge privilege. Geoff and I always have a great time with one another, so it’s going to be awesome calling games inside a packed Fowler Events Center.”
Transitioning to baseball in the spring, Fernandez and Gorham will be on the call for games from Totman Stadium as CBU looks to unleash one of the nation’s best hitters – Nicholas Dumensil – on some serious competition. The Lancers play Portland, Utah, Air Force, UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine, UNLV, Long Beach State and Grand Canyon at home this season.
“What I’m excited about is their passion,” CBU baseball coach Gary Adcock said. “Passion is a word we use a lot around our baseball program (and) no one can debate that those two guys are passionate about Riverside and sports, and now they’re going to add CBU to that so we’re really fortunate.”
Gorham and Adcock have been friends since childhood, which should make for some more-than-interesting on-air commentaries this season.
“Man, isn’t that scary?” Adcock said. “Those guys have some stories they could share on-air that might get me in trouble.”
ATHENAS CLOSE IN ON TITLE
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s soccer team clinched a berth in the conference semifinals and is two wins from at least a share of a regular season title.
Led by to goals by Flora Glantz, the Athenas (10-2-3 overall) beat CalTech 5-3 on Saturday, Oct. 26 to earn their fifth consecutive victory and secure a spot in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament next week.
CMS hosts Pomona-Pitzer (13-1-2) in the SCIAC regular season finale on Saturday at 7 p.m.
CRAFT INDUCTED INTO HALL
Riverside City College football coach Tom Craft has been inducted into the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame, the organization announced on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Craft, who has claimed two mythical national championships and has a 142-21 record in 14 seasons at Riverside, leads the No. 2-ranked Tigers (6-1 overall) into a game at Saddleback this week.
Riverside led the nation in offense with more than 522 yards per game last year. The Tigers are averaging more than 608 yards a game this season.
PANTHERS POURING IN GOALS
The Chaffey College women’s soccer team is knocking on the door of the United Soccer Coaches rankings once again.
The Panthers (12-3-3 overall), ranked as high as No. 1 in the National Junior College Division III poll earlier this season, are currently unbeaten over their last eight matches and have scored 15 goals in the three matches over the last two weeks – all victories.
Chaffey hosts Mt. San Jacinto (9-5-5) on Friday at 3 p.m., before traveling for matches at Desert, Mira Costa and Santa Barbara to end the regular season.
