CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Interscholastic League's (RIIL) middle school girls soccer championship ended in controversy earlier this week. The match Monday night between Chariho and Lincoln at Cranston Stadium ended in a tie and went to penalty kicks. Believing that each team kicked five penalties, game officials declared Lincoln the winner with a 3-2 advantage. After investigating, the RIIL determined that both teams only completed four full rounds. In a letter obtained by 12 News, the league admitted to ending the game early and apologized for the error. "The RIIL has been in communication with school leaders to apologize and acknowledge the frustration and disappointment over the events that have transpired," the letter read. "Most importantly, the RIIL understands the impact that situations like this can have on the players and hopes that it doesn't diminish all that they have achieved this season." Chariho Head Coach Matt Denecour told 12 News that their words fell flat. "It basically says, 'Sorry about that we made a mistake,' but that's it," he explained. There are currently no make-up games on the schedule, so Lincoln retains the state title. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now 12 Sports this Week SIGN UP NOW
