Epic Charter offers laidoff teachers a pay decrease instead
Oct 31, 2024
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Epic Charter Schools sent out a second letter this week to teachers who were laid off with an option to stay on, but it comes with a pay decrease.
On top of that, many of the teachers told News 4 that they were told they could not talk about the agreement and sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement with Epic.
One teacher who didn't want to be known sent her agreement ,which told her she had just over a day or so to decide. The deadline to decide was set for the end of the workday on October 31.
"Some are losing more than one month's pay, some are losing for the entire year," said one teacher who had received the agreement.
This comes a few days after Epic sent a letter out to many teachers announcing the layoffs came because their student enrollment numbers did not meet expectations.
Teachers told News 4 that they were told administration positions are taking a 1% decrease in pay.
In an email obtained by News 4, Superintendent Bart Banfield explained that Epic is dealing with “financial challenges due to student enrollment numbers not meeting our anticipated growth” and that decisions would have to be made to adjust to the challenges.
"I think it's ridiculous that teachers are effectively being held hostage," said Representative Andy Fugate (D-Del City).
Fugate has been a strong supporter of teachers for years in public, private, and otherwise.
Epic Charter Schools in a statement to News 4 said, “Epic Charter Schools is currently going through a school-wide reorganization to right-size programs, services, and staffing due to student enrollment numbers that did not rise to our anticipated growth for the 2024-2025 school year. We are doing everything we can to ensure the educational experience isn’t disrupted for our current students and families, and to support those impacted by the staffing position adjustments.”
