Woman charged with vehicular homicide in 2022 crash

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A 23-year-old woman has been charged with vehicular homicide two years after a driver was killed in a crash in South Memphis.
Police said Jewel Rhymes was speeding and driving recklessly when she rear-ended a driver stopped at a red light at E. H. Crump and Danny Thomas on May 30, 2022.

Investigators said Rhymes was headed west on Crump in a Nissan Altima when she crashed into a Chevrolet HHR, fatally injuring John Quimby.
MPD said crash data records showed that Rhymes was driving 72.7 miles per hour in a 40-mph zone at the point of impact. Rhymes is also charged with failure to exercise due care.

Court records show Rhymes was charged with reckless driving in 2020.
An officer said he saw Rhymes weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed at Highland and Windover, nearly hitting two vehicles. The misdemeanor charge was later dismissed.
Rhymes is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
