Oct 31, 2024
It was a breezy and unseasonably warm Halloween across Central and Eastern Kentucky as a cold front moved in from the west. We started the day with temperatures in the mid-60s, which is where we should be for our average highs on the final day of October. Despite some cloudiness and scattered showers moving in, afternoon highs still managed to sneak into the mid-70s on the heels of a strong southwest wind, which gusted over 30 miles per hour at times. With the front pressing eastward into the early hours of Friday scattered showers and a few storms will continue across the region providing some much needed rainfall after our extended stretch of dry weather through October. As we flip the calendar to November  on Friday the frontal system should be exiting the state although a few showers will be possible across the southern half of the state early. Cooler, drier air will filter in as the day wears on with a return of sunshine expected through the afternoon. With a light north wind in place, high temperatures should be much more indicative of the beginning of November with readings in the mid-60s across the board. It should be a pleasantly cool evening for high school football as the regular season wraps up so make sure and take a jacket or sweatshirt if you are heading to a game as temperatures should be falling through the 50s. Heading into the weekend our weather looks pleasant with a dry and mostly sunny day expected on Saturday. This will be a great time for outdoor activities as temperatures jump back into the upper 60s, which is just a few degrees above average for the first weekend of November. By Sunday another storm system will be developing out to our west and it looks like a warm front will now arc through the area to close out the weekend. This will be the leading edge of yet another round of unseasonably warm air that will head our way into early next week. Expect a few clouds along with a low end scattered shower chance as afternoon highs surge into the mid-70s. Don’t forget about the time change as we “fall back” with clocks set back 1 hour with daylight saving time ending at 2am on Sunday so enjoy that extra hours sleep Saturday night! A ridge of high pressure along the east coast should have just enough strength to hold the storm system to our west in check to begin next week so it looks mainly dry and unseasonably warm on Monday and into Election Day. While there is a low end shower chance both days, the majority of the rain chances will be across far western Kentucky closer to the area of low pressure and frontal boundary. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 70s, a solid 15 degrees plus above average for this time of the year so it should feel nice as folks get out to vote on Tuesday. In fact we could make a legitimate run at record highs temperatures on Monday and Tuesday so that’s something to watch! The storm system out west will eventually win out with a better chance of rain into the mid-week followed by a bit of a cool down once the frontal boundary moves to our east.
