FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (WANE) — A soldier faces charges in connection to the homicide of a sergeant who was originally from Ligonier.
According to a Facebook post from Fort Leonard Wood, the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel preferred charges against 21-year-old Specialist Wooster Rancy on Wednesday.
Sgt. Sarah Roque, 23, was killed earlier this month in Missouri, where she was stationed.
"The general nature of the charges against Specialist Rancy is for the murder of Sergeant Sarah Roque on Oct. 20, and obstructing justice in violation of Articles 118 and 131b of the Uniform Code of Military Justice," the Army said in the post.
Roque had been reported missing after she didn't show up for her morning duties on Oct. 21. She was found dead in a dumpster, and the Army said a person of interest was taken into custody later that week.
Rancy served alongside Roque in the 5th Engineer Battalion. He's being held until a preliminary hearing.
The Army said Rancy is from North Miami, Florida, and has served as a combat engineer with the 509th Clearance Company, 5th Engineer Battalion. He joined the Army in 2022 and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood.
Roque's homicide is still being investigated.
