Community members demand further action against Colleton County deputy for incident outside of church

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCBD) – A group of pastors and community members demanded further action from the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office after a September incident involving a deputy outside of Cypress Creek Christian Church.
“He chose in mid-September to stop on this African American church property and do his business,” said Pastor Thomas Dixon, a community activist, during a news conference on Thursday outside of the Walterboro church. “And so, now we’re coming forward wondering why is it that he’s not held to the same standard as everyone else?”
A video surfaced on social media a few weeks ago showing what CCSO claimed is Deputy Nathan Tuten about to urinate on the pump house outside of the church. The agency said Tuten didn’t go through with it.
“…While we recognize that he made the bad choice to attempt to relieve himself behind a pump house on the property—situated away from the church and highway—he promptly returned to his patrol car upon seeing a camera and left the area immediately. Sheriff Hill and Deputy Tuten personally met with the Church Pastor and the Board of Trustees to offer their apologies,” Detective Laura Rutland, the Public Information Officer for the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, said in part.
Deputy Tuten did receive a consultation and verbal counseling for violating a department policy, according to Det. Rutland.
The agency said the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Public Integrity Unit also investigated but submitted a letter of declination.
“What may seem as nothing more than a bad decision or poor judgement is very well a sign of the uttermost disrespect to those that are past, present, and those in the future,” Pastor Keon Stephens, who is a Colleton County resident, remarked during the news conference.
Pastor Dixon called for Deputy Tuten to be charged with indecent exposure and to be placed on unpaid administrative leave.
“So, whether he did it, or whether he didn’t, the intent to disrespect, to violate, to desecrate, this property was done by that officer,” Pastor Dixon said.
Colleton County Sheriff Guerry “Buddy” Hill and Deputy Tuten issued a public apology back in September, calling the actions, “inappropriate.”
