East County family highlights importance of breast cancer early detection

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, an East County woman and her granddaughter are on a mission make early detection for breast cancer a top priority for women.
Richelle Nurse and her granddaughter Sage live each day for Jessie, who lost her battle with breast cancer.
"She found a lump during pregnancy, probably had it prior to," Nurse explained.
Jessie was just 25 years old when she was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in its late stages. It is a type of cancer that only accounts for about 10% of breast cancer cases overall, even more rare for Jessie’s young age.
"It was incurable, she was given a 5% chance," Nurse said.
Jessie fought hard and cherished every moment until she passed away at 28 years old, just days after her daughter’s third birthday.

"She showed up, she suited up, she did everything she possibly could to make Sage not forget her," Nurse said.
After Jessie’s passing in 2022, the pair are all but "painted the town" pink for breast cancer awareness.
"We started painting the yard. We started making bracelets. We started making keychains," Nurse said.
Richelle also recently had an eight-foot breast cancer awareness ribbon erected in their backyard, made by a local welder.
"Cancer took her out, but not without a purpose," Nurse said.
Nurse believes there are many other young women out there, just like her daughter, who may be overlooking early warning signs. She's made it her mission to remind others that early detection can make all the difference with breast cancer.
"Now I realize you don’t have to know what you’re looking for. Just feel around and if you feel anything unusual, go to the doctor. Just go get checked. That’s all you have to do," Nurse said.
