AAA urges drivers to watch out for trickortreaters this Halloween
Oct 31, 2024
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — AAA Northeast is asking drivers not to "drive like a zombie" this Halloween.
They are reminding those on the road to stay alert, sober, and to watch out for trick-or-treaters.
Halloween is the deadliest night of the year for young pedestrians, crash data shows. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, between 2008 and 2022, 50 pedestrians under the age of 18 were killed in crashes on Oct. 31.
AAA urges drivers to slow down, saying that a pedestrian is twice as likely to be killed if they are hit by a car traveling at 35 mph, compared to 25 mph. Even a small difference in speed can save a life.
AAA is reminding drivers to stay sober as well. On Halloween 2022, nationwide 28 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes. That's why AAA says it is important to either have a designated driver or another form of transportation.
Traffic experts say it's crucial to talk to your children about safe trick-or-treating.
"If you've got young children, chaperone them, make sure the group has a flashlight," said Jillian Young, the director of public relations at AAA Northeast. "Everyone's cellphone has a flashlight now, so you don't even have to go digging through the drawers. That's going to make sure that you can see cars and cars can see you."
Another important reminder from AAA Northeast: buckle up. If you are driving between neighborhoods, always use seat belts or the appropriate car seats.
