Kentucky’s first licensed Medical Cannabis safety compliance testing lab
NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) —- Kentucky’s first medical cannabis safety compliance facility is ready to get to work ahead of the legalization of medical marijuana starting January 1, 2025.
Ryan Bellone with KCA Labs says they’ve been anticipating this day for five years.
“For the last couple of years, we’ve been a food testing lab and a hemp lab,” Bellone said.
He says their job is to ensure patients receive the correct product with the correct dosage. For example, they make sure a 10-milligram marijuana gummy has exactly 10 milligrams. They also look for harmful contaminants such as pesticides and heavy metals.
“With the cultivators and the processors, we have to test a prescribed amount of material per batch,” Bellone said.
From the cultivators to the labs, the process of making the medical marijuana available to patients takes a few months,
“My goal is to see Kentucky be one of the most successful states with a program like this, I would like to see us have some of the highest quality cannabis on the shelves out of any of these states,” Bellone said.
Starting January 1, 2025, patients seeking a medical cannabis card can start applying through the state. You can click here for a guide on how to apply.
