INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man was sentenced on Thursday after his son died from ingesting drugs that he left on the bed, according to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.
Tyrone Boyd received 42 years in prison after being found guilty for Neglect of a Dependent.
“A child has lost his life due to the defendant’s negligent actions,” said Prosecutor Mears.
“The safety of our youth should be the top priority for every parent. We are proud to have secured justice for this young victim, and we hope this opens the door for more conversations about what adults in our community can do to keep our children safe and healthy inside the home.”
Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched on Aug. 22, 2020, to an apartment at the 6000 block of Newberry Road on a report of an unresponsive three-year-old. Upon arrival, the child was taken to Riley Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Further investigation found that the child was sleeping in the bed with his dad. When the dad, Boyd, woke up he noticed that the child was facing down and not breathing.
Authorities were later granted a search warrant for the home and found narcotics on the bed.
Toxicology reports said the child died from fentanyl, dextromethorphan, and norfentanyl found in his system.
