The Fort Wayne Police Department later identified the man as 43-year-old Nicholas Thomas, who was wanted in connection to a prior domestic violence incident. Thomas faces preliminary felony charges of strangulation, criminal confinement armed with a deadly weapon, domestic battery with a deadly weapon, and intimidation.
At around 6 a.m. police were sent to the North Highlands apartments located on St. Marys Avenue just south of West State Boulevard. Emergency dispatchers said police were involved in an investigation, but did not elaborate.
A WANE 15 videographer after arriving on the scene said there were two police drones in the air and officers were told to form a perimeter. An armored vehicle arrived a short time later.
After 7 a.m., a loud boom could be heard, followed by police on a megaphone who said the following, "...you are under arrest, we are not leaving. This is the Fort Wayne SWAT Team. Exit now."
