GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCBD) - In the wake of International Paper's announcement regarding the closure of Georgetown's Pulp and Paper Mill, officials in Georgetown have released statements about the impact. Georgetown County officials expressed they were saddened to learn International Paper is closing its mill in Georgetown. The county also spoke of the 'devasting' loss they are experiencing as the mill is scheduled to close at the end of 2024. "IP has been a great corporate citizen here for nearly 90 years, and the loss is devastating. In addition to the elimination of nearly 700 jobs, there are further community impacts including to contractors, small businesses and nonprofits," said Jackie R. Broach, Public Information Officer for Georgetown County. County officials say its Administrator and Economic Development staff plan to meet with International Paper on Thursday for more information. The county will then meet with local, regional, and state-level officials and business partners to determine a way forward. "There will be new employment opportunities coming in the near future and we need to coordinate efforts to best serve our community," added Georgetown County officials. Georgetown Mayor Carol Jayroe also released a statement describing International Paper as a fixture in the Georgetown community for decades. She says the company played a large role in the local economy and in supporting their community. "The shutting down of the mill is unfortunate because of the positive impact it has sustainedover the years in Georgetown. Our hearts go out to those being affected by thisclosure," added Mayor Jayroe.
